Cloncrow Bog and Village Trail
The village of Tyrrellspass is positioned on high ground between two extensive areas of raised bog. Cloncrow Bog covers 234 hectres to the west, and Tore Bog lies to the South. Our trail is a 3.5 k circular walk, through this unique peatland habitat and back through the village of Tyrrellspass. The visitor is guided along the route with qr code signs giving audio descriptions of key points along the trail.
Cloncrow Bog is a Natural Heritage Area. It is one of the few remaining intact raised bogs in the midlands. It has a unique variety of highly specialised plants and animals which survive in this vanishing habitat. Your journey will bring you down a wooded bog boreen and on to a Boardwalk to cross the bog surface. You will walk through the surrounding cut over area which is being recolonised by natural native woodland.
The Village Trail highlights the unique cultural heritage of Tyrrellspass. Using the qr codes along the route listen to local people describe the story of the village from its foundation with the arrival of the Norman Tyrrell family.
